Teams ready for hockey shoot-out

CASEY Cannons Hockey Club is preparing to host its annual Shoot-out Cup this Saturday.
The seven-a-side tournament started last year and will become a regular event on the club’s social calendar.
It is played in a round-robin format, with matches starting at 9am and running until about 5pm.
There will be a men’s and women’s event, with teams split into competitive and social categories.
On top of the hockey action, there will be jumping castles, a refreshment tent and prizes given away.
Money raised will go towards the continued construction of Casey’s clubhouse.
Committee member Lorraine Ritchie is looking forward to the day and hopes to attract a good audience.
“It’s a fun day for people to watch if they’ve never seen hockey before,” she said.
“The clubhouse is almost finished, so we just need to raise money for the last bit inside.
“We’ve never had a clubhouse before. We’ve been operating out of little sheds.”
The fledgling club was formed in 1989 as the Berwick Hockey Club and became known as Casey Hockey Club in 1998.
“Casey is a very family-oriented club,” Ritchie said.
“We have lots of kids coming through that have some good potential as players.”
The club boasted four representatives at last month’s Australian Indoor Hockey Championships in Wollongong and had another at the national under-18 tournament on the Gold Coast.
Up to 200 players are expected to be in action on Saturday and the winners will be presented with their trophies at 6.30pm.
“Last year people set up their little umbrellas, could buy food and there was a real festive feel to it,” Ritchie said.
Casey Hockey Club is behind Berwick Secondary College in Manuka Road, Berwick.
