Numbers mount for Riding of the Bounds

MORE than 140 people participated in the 18th Annual Riding of the Bounds event on Sunday, 23 April.
The Hotspur trophy for Champion Rider Award was awarded to Teaghan Boothroyd, riding Hey Hey.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford congratulated all the winners and riders for taking part in the historic event, which involves riders on horseback or in horse-drawn vehicles travelling together to inspect and secure the City of Casey boundaries.
“Riding of the Bounds is one of Casey’s annual highlights and brings together riders of all disciplines,” Cr Bradford said.
It celebrated a tradition of the City of Casey’s Sister City Berwick-upon-Tweed, in the UK for more than 550 years.
“Congratulations to all those involved in celebrating the event, with many participants making their own costumes and continuing the wonderful tradition of the Riding of the Bounds,” Cr Bradford said.
Cr Bradford also acknowledged the invaluable contribution of head marshal Jack Rae, who helped organise the ride and led the contingent on his mare.
“Jack Rae is one of Casey’s most outstanding and enduring volunteers, having been involved in all 18 Riding of the Bounds events.
“His extensive knowledge of the local area and of the equine industry is of great assistance to the City of Casey in putting on this event for horse riders who come from many parts of Victoria to participate.”
The three-hour ride took participants on a picturesque 15-kilometre journey around Beaconsfield and Berwick.
On returning to Akoonah Park the riders were treated to a free barbecue provided by the City of Casey and the Rotary Club of Narre Warren.
The City of Casey also gratefully acknowledged the support of local businesses in helping put on the event, including Berwick Fruit and Veg, Pakenham Produce and Saddlery and Farmhand in Cranbourne.
