CASEY’S youth need to get their skates on and respond to a new strategy set to address the city’s skating needs.
The council’s draft Skate Strategy is to be placed on community exhibition for one month and keen skaters are invited to place submissions and comment on the proposal.
The new strategy considers the demand for skate park facilities from BMX riders, skate boarders and recreational inline skaters.
It states that 5508 young people currently skate in Casey – most aged between five and 19 years of age.
The document also identifies the need for a number of sub-regional skate facilities in Berwick, Hampton Park, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills due to high demand, and recommends the upgrading of other existing facilities throughout the city.
Councillor Lorraine Wreford welcomed the Skate Strategy at last week’s council meeting, and said skating was an important part of youth activity in Casey.
But she said there was also a need for a larger facility located within the city to cater for skaters of all levels and skills.
Mayor Kevin Bradford said skating appealed to a lot of people in the area and was a positive and healthy way to keep young people entertained.
The draft strategy is available at Casey Customer service centres in Narre Warren, Narre Warren South and Cranbourne and on the City of Casey website.
A final report for the Skate Strategy will be presented to councillors at the end of the exhibition period and will address all submissions.
