City bid to stay beautiful

THE City of Casey has entered five community projects into this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) Sustainable Cities Award to be judged later this year.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said last year the city was extremely successful in being awarded Victoria’s Most Sustainable City and it was hoped to build on this success and recognise some new key community achievements in the 2006 Awards.
“There are outstanding individuals and groups across Casey committed to improving their local environments for the whole community to enjoy.
“On behalf of the City of Casey, I congratulate their ongoing efforts and hope that we can gain statewide recognition for some of their key achievements,” he said.
The five projects entered in the 2006 KABV Sustainable Cities Award categories are:
Award for Environmental Innovation – Eumemmerring Federation Food Garden – The Eumemmerring Federation Food Garden Working Group has developed a food garden on the banks of the Eumemmerring Creek as a free resource for the local community.
Protection of the
Environment Award – Restoring Indigenous Vegetation and Increasing Habitat in the City of Casey – The Cardinia Catchment Landcare group has undertaken numerous projects to increase the amount of indigenous vegetation in the community.
Proud Schools Award
Fountain Gate Primary School – The school was nominated by the City of Casey due to its whole-school approach to waste reduction and sustainability issues.
Berwick Secondary
College – The school has undertaken two significant environmental projects within the past 12 months.
Spirit of Australia Award -Old Fisherman’s Cottage, Tooradin – The building has been transformed to create a facility for the local community and visitors to learn about history and environmental values.
