Pet code for animal care

CASEY mayor Janet Halsall has backed the State Government’s recent introduction of new codes of practice for dog and cat owners.
Cr Halsall said the new codes would provide guidance for owners to safeguard their pets’ welfare.
“Taking ownership of a dog or cat is a significant commitment because they require food, need to be registered, vaccinated, microchipped, trained, exercised and provided with a safe and secure home,” she said.
“There are over 27,000 dogs registered in Casey and over 9000 cats registered, so it is important to have in place minimum standards for the appropriate care of dogs and cats.”
The codes of practice have been developed to provide guidance for pet owners in relation to standards of care for both dogs and cats including pet nutrition, health, breeding, surgical procedures, housing, transport, training, socialisation and exercise.
Copies of the code of practice can be found at council’s customer service centres.
For more information, contact council’s local laws unit on 9705 5200.
