AN ENDEAVOUR Hills man had his car impounded by police on the weekend after being clocked driving more than 60km/h above the speed limit.
Police detected the 20-year-old man driving at 144km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Princes Highway in Springvale about 1.30am on Saturday.
Senior Sergeant Alan Dew of Dandenong Traffic Management Unit (TMU) said that just moments later another car, driven by a 23-year-old Noble Park man, passed the first driver.
Both men were apprehended by police when they stopped at a set of red lights.
The drivers had their cars impounded for 48 hours and had to pay an impoundment fee of $490.
Sen Sgt Dew said they would be charged by summons with speeding and other related offences, and would appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
As of July 1, new State Government legislation gave police the power to seize cars from drivers caught drag racing, performing “burnouts” or engaging in other dangerous “hoon” acts.
The move gives officers the power to impound, immobilise or permanently confiscate hoon vehicles.
