THERE was cake for everyone last week when a local walking group celebrated its second birthday.
The Westfield Walkers marked its milestone on Friday when more than 60 walkers turned out to celebrate the occasion at the Fountain Gate shopping centre.
Every Wednesday and Friday the group meets before the start of trade and strides around the mall under the guidance of a qualified fitness instructor from the YMCA.
The free program was initiated by Westfield Fountain Gate which continues to support the initiative.
The group now has 263 registered members and attracts an average of 60 walkers each session.
Narre Warren resident and passionate walker Gwen McKinnon has been a part of the group since it first started and said she could not believe that they had already spent two years together.
Many of the walkers, including Ms McKinnon, have also joined together to from a group called the Early Birds that now has more than 30 members.
Ms McKinnon walks at least 10 kilometres a week and walks twice a week at Westfield.
Earlier in the year the Early Birds took part in the third annual Casey Cardinia Relay for Life and raised $4649 for cancer research, education and patient support programs.
The Westfield Walkers attracts men and women aged from their mid-20s to mid-80s.
Ms McKinnon said she had made many new friends since joining the group and enjoyed the social atmosphere as well as keeping fit.
