POLICE have issued a stern warning to would-be firebugs after a fire was deliberately started at a Berwick school last Friday.
The latest incident to spark official concern occurred at the Beaconhills College campus on Kangan Drive when a large grass heap was set ablaze about 4.30pm.
Local CFA crews were quickly called to the scene and put the fire out before it could pose any danger to the school buildings and equipment.
Police said they would like to speak to a teenage boy who was seen running away from the fire soon after it started or anyone else who may have witnessed the fire.
Narre Warren Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Wilcox said that with the current extreme fire danger and blazes raging across Victoria, it was disappointing to see a fire being deliberately lit.
“With the weather we have had it is a very dangerous thing to do,” he said.
“It might seem fun at the time but it can lead to far more serious consequences.”
Det Sen Sgt Wilcox appealed to parents to be more aware of the whereabouts of their children over the school holiday period.
“Parents need to know where their children are and what they are doing,” he said.
