School cleans up for water savings

HILLSMEADE Primary School is saving water and at the same time earning dollars.
Students from the Narre Warren school are selling new water saving showerheads and putting the money towards water saving projects around the school.
South East Water is providing the schools with the showerheads, which are valued at $100, to sell to family and friends for $15.
School principal Anne Nicholls said the students had sold more than 100 showerheads.
“It has been a fabulous program and we are quite indebted to South East Water for the interest they have shown in our school for the program,” Ms Nicholls said.
She said the money raised would go towards the cost of installing several water tanks at the school.
South East Water managing director Dennis Cavagna said the water efficient showerheads would benefit students, parents and Hillsmeade Primary School.
“The great thing about buying these particular water efficient showerheads is that you not only save water in your own home, but help the school to reduce their water use at the same time through the initiatives the funds are used for,” Mr Cavagna said.
It is estimated that using a water efficient showerhead can reduce household water and energy bills by as much as $60 a year and save 20,000 litres a year.
Mr Cavagna said that following significant reductions in water use in the garden it was time to focus on saving water inside the home.
“With stage three water restrictions now in place we need to be extremely mindful of how we use water in and around the home.”
