Games’ leftovers ‘a prize catch’

THREE giant fish sculptures used in the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony will have permanent homes at various Casey aquatic facilities and venues.
Fish species from each of the 71 member nations of the Commonwealth were the basis for the 71 sculptures created for the Games earlier this year.
Following the Games, the State Government called for expressions of interest from councils and others interested in providing a permanent home for the fish.
The City of Casey has secured the roach, representing England, the dolphin fish, representing Malta, and the leather back turtle, representing St Lucia.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said he was thrilled with the catch.
“Not only do these aquatic sculptures provide Casey with a lasting legacy of the historic Commonwealth Games, but the colourful fish are also unique and beautiful pieces of public art for the community to enjoy for generations to come.”
The roach sculpture is to be located at the new Cranbourne Aquatic and Leisure Centre, which opens at the end of 2008. The sculpture will be integrated as an architectural element into the design of the building and included as part of the overall project budget.
The dolphin fish will be located at Tooradin near the new Ron Mantel Boardwalk, to be officially launched in early November, and the leather back turtle will be located near the Casey ARC in Narre Warren.
Cr Bradford said the three sites were accessible and highly visible, and the sculptures would add to the attraction of the areas.
