Petition demands end to carnage

By Rebecca Fraser
MORE than 550 people have signed a new petition urging VicRoads to upgrade a notorious Eumemmerring intersection to bring an end to what they called carnage.
The petition asked VicRoads to place traffic lights on the uncontrolled intersection of Olive Road and Princes Highway, Eumemmerring, to bring an end to the carnage.
At last Tuesday night’s council meeting Cr Wayne Smith presented the petition, which asked that traffic lights be installed on the busy stretch of road, before Casey Council.
Cr Smith said something needed to be done about the intersection.
He said some residents had even said that if VicRoads would not put lights there they would rather see the intersection closed.
The petition says a horrendous number of horrific accidents, some of which have been fatal, happened weekly. “We, the undersigned concerned residents and visitors of this area, have had enough,” it reads.
“The accidents at this uncontrolled intersection have had a devastating effect on the lives of the victims, their families and friends and us as residents and visitors,” the petition said.
In February the News spoke to young Eumemmerring resident Jessica Heus, who was seriously injured in a smash at the intersection last year.
Ms Heus said it was crucial that VicRoads install lights at the busy intersection before someone else was killed.
At the time Steve Brown, VicRoads Metro South East regional manager, said VicRoads would be reviewing road safety at the location.
