A LATE night caravan explosion was felt and heard by hundreds of Berwick residents on Monday night.
The explosion, which alarmed many nearby residents, occurred in the rear yard of a Vista Court home about 10pm.
The Berwick CFA attended the scene.
Brigade captain Alan Boyd said fire officers found the caravan had been ripped apart by a huge internal explosion.
He said the force of the blast destroyed the shell and many of the internal fittings of the van.
It is believed the explosion was the result of a gas build-up in the van, which subsequently ignited.
Mr Boyd said the force of the blast blew out the flames, and that there was little damage caused by fire.
He said that firefighters were amazed that no one was injured.
The damage was estimated to be in the vicinity of $15,000.
