Cars on track as students slot in to meet a challenge

EUMEMMERRING College students had the need for speed during a recent visit to a slot car shop.
The Gleneagles campus students designed and constructed six slot cars as part of a Year nine advance program which culminated in an official race day at Mr Slot Cars in Dandenong.
Advance program teacher Colin Ryan said the students involved in the project took on the role of organising every aspect.
“It’s been a great experience for students to improve their communication, organisation and leadership skills,” he said.
“They have been solely responsible for all aspects of the Slot Car Challenge – such as organising transport, awards, race record sheets, publicity and liaising with the primary schools,” Mr Ryan said.
Students from Thomas Mitchell and Southern Cross Primary Schools gained the experience of learning to construct a slot car and the skills of racing the car, Mr Ryan said.
Gleneagles Year nine student Hayden said it was an enjoyable project to be involved with.
“It’s been a fantastic experience and I really enjoyed visiting the primary schools to talk with the students about how we designed and constructed the slot cars,” Hayden said.
“We all had a great time racing each other and learning from the owner of Mr Slot Cars,” he said.
