CRANBOURNE RSL Bowls Club division-six team fought a great battle away from home against a strong Glen Waverley side on Saturday and won 103-90 to stay on top of the ladder.
Its exciting 13-shot victory and three out of four teams win enabled it to gain 16 points to its tally and keep it firmly in top spot.
Two of the three winning teams clinched their wins by only one shot, while the comfortable 20-shot win by Gary Lacey ensured the 10-point bonus for the overall win.
RESULTS
Gary Lacey’s team (35-15) started from behind against L. Quamby’s team that had a seven-shot lead over RSL after five ends.
From the sixth end, Gary’s team took control and fought back hard, winning 16 of the next 20 ends giving it 32 shots to four over Glen Waverley and a convincing 20-shot win.
Doug Ambrose’s team (20-19) had a battle against J. Dore-Smith and took seven ends to get one shot in front and was down four shots at the tea break.
After tea it picked up the next five ends to put it seven shots up at the 18th, but the Glen fought back again winning five of the next seven ends getting to 19-18 at |the 23rd and each winning one shot for the last two ends.
Shane Riddiford’s team (25-24) put up a great effort against the Glen by leading all day until B. Reed’s team caught up at the 23rd end to be 22-all.
It got two on the 24th end, putting it two in front going into the last end when RSL fought back with three shots giving it a one-shot win.
Clary Ware’s team (23-32) put up an early fight against L. Pickert’s team that led from the start, but was caught 12-all at the 12th.
The Glen put on a big 20-shot spurt with six shots on the 14th, five on the 17th and was 17 in front on the 21st end.
RSL fought back hard claiming the remaining last four ends with eight shots to trail by nine at the end.
DIVISION THREE
Cranbourne RSL (86-100) continued to struggle in its new higher division and against a stronger Berwick team.
Darryl Wood’s team produced a great win with 21 shots up, but was not enough to carry the other three teams that had a combined deficit of 33 in spite of a home-ground advantage and finished 14 shots down overall.
RESULTS
Darryl Wood’s team (35-14) led all day, but it was a great start of winning the first 12 ends in a row that gave it a 25-shots-to-nil advantage at tea over F. Pitcher.
After tea, Berwick started its run and won eight of the next 13 ends giving it 14 shots, but was unable to catch RSL that coasted home with a comfortable 21-shot win.
Neil Drummond’s team (18-24) started off well against D. Woodfall leading by three shots to win the next four ends with eight shots up at the 17th.
Although RSL won five of the next eight ends, it was not enough to catch Berwick that finished ahead by six shots.
Barry Jones’ team (20-30) had a battle against K. Dorning’s team and won eight of the first 13 ends to be down six shots at tea as Berwick picked up 13 shots from just three ends.
On the home run each team won six ends each, but again two big ends of four and five shots put Berwick 15 shots in front at the 21st end.
RSL fought back with six shots to one on the last four ends to finally finish 10 shots down.
R. Drummond’s team (13-30) started the first half against J. Sinclair with a neck-and-neck event to be nine-all at tea.
Berwick put on the pressure after tea winning nine of the next 13 ends to win comfortably by 17 shots.
