Drag hoons make a comeback

POLICE have renewed calls for people to dob in hoon drivers following a recent spurt of drag racing in Hallam’s industrial estates.
Acting Sergeant Graeme Stanley, of Endeavour Hills police, urged residents to be aware of dangerous drivers or people congregating to watch drag racing.
He urged residents to utilise the Hoon Hotline if they noticed something unsafe.
The hotline is a City of Casey initiative that operates in partnership with Victoria Police.
The toll-free number is 1800 18 HOON (1800 184 666) and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The aim of the hotline is to help make Casey’s streets safer.
This initiative is the first of its kind to be implemented in Victoria.
Sgt Stanley said the Hallam area had become a common meeting place for hoons and tyre marks were clearly visible in the industrial estate’s streets, indicating drags.
He said Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights were the most popular nights for dragsters and urged the community to help police keep tabs on the whereabouts of local hoons.
Callers to the hotline will answer a series of questions and information will be entered on a secure database for analysis.
Callers ringing with emergencies will be referred to the 000 emergency number.
All the information generated from the hotline will be kept for investigation and statistical purposes, primarily to help the council and police identify potential hot spots for irresponsible driving.
