Drive-by shooting ‘not random’

By Callan Date
A BERWICK family is lucky to be alive after their house was sprayed with bullets during a drive-by shooting on Monday.
Six shots were fired into the Golf Links Road house about 2.30am while the five occupants, including two children under the age of one, slept inside.
A bullet was found lodged metres from where one of the children was sleeping in a back bedroom.
Police believe a semi-automatic pistol was used in the shooting, which was described by detectives as being “not a random attack”.
Narre Warren Detective Sergeant Garry Kear said no-one was injured in the premeditated attack.
“The way the shots have been fired, the projectile of the bullets, it makes it appear that the house was targeted,” he said.
He said the bullets were fired about 10 minutes after the last occupant switched off the lights and went to bed.
“It could have been that they were waiting outside for the house lights to go out before they fired the shots,” Det Sgt Kear said.
Police spoke to neighbours but were unable to glean any information about the type of car used in the drive-by shooting.
Detectives continued their investigation throughout Monday morning and are calling for anyone who may be able to assist with information about the crime.
“If anyone has seen any suspicious activity on the night or in the days leading up to the shooting we would like to hear from them,” Det Sgt Kear said.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Narre Warren Police on 9705 3111.
