Farmers’ market still flourishes

A CHANGE in position didn’t stop the Casey-Berwick Farmers’ Market from being a successful day.
On Saturday 24 November the popular event was temporarily moved to the back paddocks of Berwick’s Old Cheese Factory.
Members of the Rotary Club who organise the day woke up at 6.30am to begin setting up the 38 stalls with customers already entering the gates before they officially opened at 8am.
The effort proved to be worthwhile as between 1500 to 1600 people swamped the market which is known for its high quality fresh fruit and locally grown vegetables.
“It’s a genuine farmers’ market,” market manager Geoff Rankin said.
Although numbers were slightly lower than last time, workers were very pleased with the turnout.
Smiles were worn all round by both stall owners and customers throughout the day as temperatures sat at a comfortable 23 degrees. Mr Rankin hopes that people will keep returning to support the event that’s been running for more than 18 months.
“All funds raised are donated back to the community,” he said.
The next market will be held three days before Christmas on Saturday 22 December back in the gardens of the Old Cheese Factory on 34 Homestead Road, Berwick.
Organisers said that this will be a great chance to stock up on Christmas goods.
