Move on for drought help

CASEY’S farmers could be in for some welcome financial relief from the drought if a State Government application for assistance is successful.
The request has been forwarded to the Federal Government and outlines reasons why farmers in this region should be granted exceptional circumstances status.
The application was completed with assistance from the Victorian Farmers’ Federation and, if successful, will allow Casey’s eligible farmers to receive Centrelink drought assistance relief payments.
Casey and neighbouring Cardinia Shire will be among the municipalities included in the submission, Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said.
“The Bracks Government has submitted an application presenting an appropriate argument that exceptional circumstances exist to warrant additional support being made available to farmers in the City of Casey and other drought affected areas,” Mr Donnellan said.
He said the lack of rain and the effect on farmers and their families within the City of Casey is clearly evident.
Mr Donnellan said the farmers throughout the Casey area bring vital economic benefits to the city.
“Our farmers need all the assistance they can get. It is only right that both State and Federal Governments assist our farmers in these tough times.
“The State Government can deliver several drought assistance programs but only after the Federal Government declares an area falls into the exceptional circumstances category.”
If the application is successful, Casey farmers will also have access to a drought apprenticeship retention bonus and further grants will be made available to Casey Council to bring forward other community projects.
