Bike fight in motion

CASEY Council is continuing its fight against the city’s illegal motor bike riders.
At Tuesday’s council meeting councillor Paul Richardson moved that the council review its laws and policy prohibiting the riding of motor bikes in public parks, council reserves and local streets within the city.
The report would include suggestions of how the council could further restrict the illegal activity, which might include increased monetary penalties and more emphasis on the confiscation of offending bikes.
Councillor Lorraine Wreford spoke against the motion and said she was concerned that it could blur the line between the role of the council and the role of the police.
However, Cr Richardson said illegal motor bike riding was a serious issue facing Casey and people and children had the right to go to public parks and feel safe.
“I have heard instances of people nearly being bowled over on the footpath by motorbikes,” he said.
“I am going to keep on this issue until it is properly addressed.”
A report is to be presented back to the council by December.
