Mayor moves for street bins

RECYCLING bins may hit Casey’s streets in a bid to encourage city-wide environmentally friendly waste disposal.
At last Tuesday’s council meeting mayor Kevin Bradford moved that council officers investigate and report back to council the concept of using blue public-place recycling bins alongside existing council-supplied waste bins.
Cr Bradford also moved that council officers research the possibilities of applying for specific government grants (State and Federal) to offset the purchase and installation costs.
“Rubbish bins in our public places are always full and overflowing,” Cr Bradford said.
“The rubbish is a combination of plastic, recyclable products and this is not enabling residents to walk the streets and dispose of rubbish with the same measure of intensity as which they dispose of recyclable litter at home.”
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith agreed and said a lot of residents felt that they were encouraged to recycle at home but when they went out into the community the same spirit was not as forthcoming.
He said the new initiative would set an example at home and in public and better promote recycling.
