IT didn’t quite work out the way Narre Warren planned in its Turf One chase of 228 against St Mary’s.
Resuming at 2/19, Narre Warren got a off to a cautious start with night watchman Duane Hughes and captain Wendell Perumal, respecting the good bowling and getting through the early seam.
With a focus on keeping wickets in the shed, the two went along nicely, putting on 64 and shifting the swinging pendulum Narre Warren’s way.
First to go was the skipper for 42 following on from his string on scores between 30-50 from last season.
Getting starts doesn’t seem to be a problem, but getting a big score has been for the left-hander, who has gone to the top of the order this season.
This brought the young and extremely talented Matt Darvell to the crease, and he started hitting the ball like a seasoned veteran.
Hughes and Darvell put on 34 before Hughes, who was looking for a half-century on debut, was out for 46.
Gun recruit Shane Simpson joined Darvell and was run out for 3, which brought, vice-captain and hero with the ball Dwayne Scott to the centre.
With confidence on his side, Scott batted like a man who has done a big pre-season, but unfortunately was losing his mates up the other end.
Darvell departed for 21, John Simpson followed soon after without troubling the scorers, and Dwayne Thomson was gone for 12.
Narre Warren then saw the arrival of a new fashion trend in cricket when Dave Wheeler strode to the crease with his thigh pad, which looked like it was 68 years old, on the outside of his pants. It brought a few sniggers but the joy stopped there when he was stumped for 3.
Michael Sigaras was stranded short of a century on 96 when Scott was dismissed for 21.
Narre Warren was all out for 170 after a poor batting display in which it lost 7/58 off 35 overs.
The shining light was Hughes, who did an opener’s job and did the hard work of seeing off the new ball.

Resuming at 5/67 in reply to Lyndale’s 81, it had been decided by the leadership group that Narre Warren would bat for no longer than 20 overs and build a lead in an effort to bowl Lyndale out a second time.
Despite the loss of a couple of early wickets, Narre Warren showed its depth to eventually declare at 9/196.
Dylan Quirk finished with 53 not out and some outstanding hitting by Jordan Bulner (25 not out) was a highlight.
With 25 overs left Lyndale went back in to bat and was soon in trouble thanks to some fine bowling by Matthew Clarke and Josh Amsterdam, who took three wickets each.
At the end of play Lyndale was nine wickets down, just avoiding outright defeat.
A few catches downed proved costly for Narre Warren.

Defending 159 on a small ground, Hallam Kalora Park got off to a great start, which made for a difficult day for Narre Warren.
A good fightback with some tight bowling and fielding in the middle of the game gave Narre Warren a chance.
However the opposition’s good batting and Narre Warren’s ordinary fielding meant Narre Warren didn’t have enough runs on the board.
