This month was made for walking

OCTOBER is the month to celebrate walking in Casey with local residents urged to take a series of healthy events in their stride.
The month is internationally recognised as Walktober – “the month to celebrate walking” and local residents have been encouraged to take part in a series of local events.
Genevieve Silvagni of Cardinia-Casey Community Health Service said walking is one of the simplest things people can do to improve health and wellbeing.
Cardinia-Casey Community Health Service, Southern Health, the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire Council, the YMCA and Casey Cardinia Library have organised a series of activities to promote walking.
Tomorrow, Friday, 6 October, Casey residents have been encouraged to visit their local library and borrow a 10,000 steps pedometer.
The pedometers are designed to tell how many calories people burn, the kilometres they travel and the number of steps they take.
On Friday there will also be a Walk in the Park event at the Royal Botanical Gardens on Ballarto Road, Cranbourne, between 10am and noon. The cost is a gold coin donation. For details and bookings call 5995 1753.
Casey’s Greatest Pram Stroll will be held from 10am until 1pm on Saturday, 7 October at Wilson Botanic Park, Princes Highway, Berwick. Parents have been urged to bring their baby, stroller, family and friends, and enjoy a picnic lunch in a show of support to all new mums.
Entry is free. For further information contact Christine Skicko on 9705 5177.
The City of Casey will then hold an Ageing Positively Festival walk between 9.15am and 2.30pm on Wednesday, 11 October at the Cranbourne Salvation Army Centre, 1 New Holland Drive, Cranbourne. The day includes two walking workshops at 11.15am and 1pm.
Entry is free. To book call Aged and Disability Services on 9705 5375.
The Doveton Neighbourhood Learning Centre in Oak Avenue, Doveton, is also holding a community walk from 10.15am to 11.30am on Thursday, 26 October.
Entry is free. Book with the Doveton Learning Centre on 9791 1449.
