MORE than 50 people from Rebound Leisure Centre and the City of Casey have joined Casey mayor Janet Halsall’s team the Casey Walkie Talkies for the 2008 Casey Cardinia Relay for Life.
Relay for Life is an ongoing fundraiser which is held to raise money for cancer research.
Walkers and runners from teams raised throughout the City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia spend the year raising money and climax their efforts with a 24-hour relay at Akoonah Park, Berwick.
The relay starts at 6pm on Friday 29 February to end at 6pm on Saturday 1 March.
This provides a wonderful and emotional all night spectacle.
Two special times are the survivors’ first lap when people who have survived cancer, some with carers, walk the first lap, and at 9pm the candlelight ceremony will see hundreds of candles in brown paper bags begin to glow around the track. Each bag will have a glowing message of hope or recall someone lost to cancer.
The event provides an exciting family festival atmosphere with music, entertainment, activities, teams everywhere, campsites, fundraising and food stalls.
Thoughts of those fighting cancer and of those lost to cancer return but with those thoughts is hope that the relay will eliminate the terrible disease.
