IT is business as usual at the Narre Warren Library with new computer technology providing exciting opportunities to local library users.
If library patrons are putting in some extra hours over the holidays for study or for business purposes and all of the Narre Warren library computers are booked, they can now use the newly installed wireless hotspot, WiFi. WiFi is an abbreviation for Wireless Fidelity, the generic term, which provides the ability to access the Internet without cables.
At Narre Warren Library, a permanent internet connection has been installed, as well as wireless equipment that will provide radio coverage throughout the library.
The benefit to customers of this technology is that it provides fast access to the internet and customers’ intranets (provided they have appropriate remote access to their intranet).
Telstra Country Wide accounts executive Denis Hart said that having wireless hotspots available at Narre Warren Library will provide customers with an easily recognisable environment to be able to log on to their intranet or access the internet wirelessly, at high speed.
Casey-Cardinia libraries chief executive officer Peter Carter said students and business people could just bring in their laptop and connect to the internet.
“Although this is a trial, we are hopeful that Telstra wireless hotspots will be introduced to the other libraries throughout the city in the future,” he said.
