A NARRE Warren couple is seeing triple after they gave birth to three identical girls.
Rachel and David Letts welcomed Elyssa, Nikkol and Lilli into the world last month and within minutes went from a family of four to seven.
The babies are all still being cared for at the Monash Medical Centre after being born at only seven months and weighing a grand total of just over three kilograms between them.
Mr Letts said he was shocked when they found out they would be having three babies.
“When we had the first ultra sound I said ‘you have got to be joking’,” Mr Letts said.
A mother’s intuition was true to form for Ms Letts who said she knew something was different from her previous pregnancies from the outset.
“Everything happened early with the triplets compared to the other girls,” she said.
The arrival of the girls has made the male-female ratio a one-sided six to one at the Letts house – with 10-year-old Jayde and 11-month-old Jazzmyn now having three new sisters.
Mr Letts said it could be as long as January before the three can leave hospital – time that will be spent trying to turn a modest three-bedroom house into a home fit for seven.
He said the financial implications of having an extra three children were just starting to sink in.
Although the family bank balance increased by $12,000 due to the government baby bonus, Mr Letts said the money had been quickly spent on a range of essential items.
“It didn’t last long
“We had to buy three new cots and three new prams as well as an oven and new hot water service,” he said.
And the father said he had already cast an eye to the future when the identical triplets get to their teenage years.
“I am just a bit worried when they start bringing home their boyfriends,” he said.
