Catch the spirit of the dance

On Saturday, 22 July, dancers from local Indian dance group Shivalaya Nadanalaya will hold their annual concert in Cranbourne, as part of the City of Casey’s 2006 Winter Arts Program.
Performers will showcase the Bharata Natya style of traditional Indian dance and Indian folk dance items from 6.30pm to 9pm.
The group, located in both Narre Warren and Dandenong, will also perform at the Berwick Church of Christ in the Winter Arts Finale on Saturday, 29 July, treating audiences to a fusion of South and North Indian traditional dance.
Endeavour Hills dancer Revati Ilanko has urged people to attend both performances.
The Shivalaya Nadanalaya dance group was founded by Narre Warren resident Yalini Thirulojan, a graduate of Kalakshetra, the most renowned school for classical art in India.
At Kalakshetra, Mrs Thirulojan was taught Bharata Natya, Indian classical music and the string instrument the veena by world acclaimed artists.
She won the admiration of many teachers at the prestigious school for her devotion, skill and perfection of the traditional art form. Her talent and dedication has also attracted praise from the Indian Government.
Mrs Thirulojan has also performed in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Canada and the UK but for the past decade has been showing her talents in Australia.
The Indian Dance Concert on Saturday, 22 July will be held at the Cranbourne Community Theatre, Brunt Street, Cranbourne. Tickets are $10. For further inquiries, contact 0433 563 994.
The free Winter Arts Finale on Saturday, 29 July will be held from 6.45pm to 9pm at the Berwick Church of Christ, 446 Centre Road, Berwick .
