Oh baby, new-born list may top 4000

By Callan Date
BABIES are booming in Casey and so is the city’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH) service.
The new-born list may top 4000 for the municipality in 2007-08 – a record figure.
With the increase in births comes the increased demand on services and Casey officials are preparing by introducing more graduates from their Maternal and Child Health Scholarship program.
Casey manager of youth and family services Lee McIntosh said the city had 32 nurses – with ongoing recruitment still a key priority.
“In 2004-05 the number of birth notifications was 3369; in 2006-07 this number had increased to 3784,” she said.
“Based on the current figures, there is the potential to experience a birth rate of over 4000 for the 2007-08 period.”
Controversy surrounded Casey’s MCH department almost 12 months ago when concerns were raised about staffing levels.
An independent audit was conducted and some changes were made.
“Casey’s MCH Service is working within the guidelines of the Department of Human Services to provide a comprehensive service to clients and promote healthy outcomes for the children and their families,” Ms McIntosh said.
Applications for the scholarship program are again open and Casey mayor Janet Halsall has encouraged registered nurses to apply.
“MCH nurses are a valuable and important part of our community providing support, advice and guidance to parents,” Cr Halsall said.
“Council recognises the importance of this service which is available free to all families with children under the age of six in the municipality.
“That’s why we’ve introduced this scholarship program – to assist nurses in realising their dreams and, at the same time, helping our community.”
The scholarship provides financial assistance to a maximum of $3500 per successful applicant (up to 50 per cent of the total course cost) as well as assistance with student placements, study support, and opportunities to attend a range of MCH meetings and events.
Ms McIntosh said: “Casey’s MCH Scholarship program commenced in 2006 and the first graduate of the program began work with the City of Casey in August 2007.
“I really encourage nurses wanting to work in the MCH field to apply for council’s scholarship program.
“With a mentoring and transition program, professional development opportunities and support from a team of dedicated staff, Casey is a great place to work.”
