COMMUNITY stalwarts Les and Alice Egan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently.
The couple has called Narre Warren home for the last 18 years and are highly thought of among the close knit neighborhood of Van Court.
Although Mrs Egan, 83, has recently moved into an aged care facility in Berwick, they still have a strong bond after more than six decades together.
Along with the congratulatory message from dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Victoria Premier John Brumby, Mr And Mrs Egan received many plaudits from local neighbours wishing them well for their diamond anniversary.
Mr Egan, 82, said he first met Alice when he went to see a family member who was in The Alfred hospital.
“I just knew that we would be together,” Mr Egan said.
The couple married on 6 February, 1948 in Camberwell. They have two daughters Julie, and Alison, three grandsons and a grand daughter.
“It is hard to be apart these days but she is happy there and it is for the best.
“I visit whenever I can get a lift down there,” he said.
The couple spent their special day together in the presence of about 10 friends and family.
