TWO Berwick Air League junior cadets were awarded with national honours during a ceremony in Sydney last week.
Aaron Daniels, 16, was named national male Cadet of the Year and Kristen Orphanos, 17, received the runner-up award for national female Cadet of the Year.
The cadets were selected from Air League squadrons across the nation where their community work, discipline to drill and dress along with their knowledge of the Air League was tested by senior members.
Corporal Daniels has been a member of the Berwick Boys Squadron for the past four years.
He is currently undertaking flight training with the Berwick Squadron where he will soon complete his first solo flight.
Aaron has also been invited to participate in pilot interviews for the Australian Defence Force.
Sergeant Kristen Orphanos has been a member of the Berwick Girls Squadron for the past seven years.
After successfully completing her VCE at Eumemmerring College in Hallam in 2007, during which she remained a regular contributor to community service events, she is considering an offer of a traineeship in justice as a law clerk.
The duo is involved in numerous community activities such as Red Cross Calling, selling tokens for the Berwick RSL, assisting Legacy with various Anzac Day services and assisting at City of Casey citizenship and volunteer ceremonies.
Casey mayor Janet Halsall said: “I am enormously proud that we have such fine young people as Aaron and Kristen whose dedication to the Casey community has impressed at a national level.
“I congratulate Aaron and Kristen on their achievements and I especially thank the Berwick Air League for nurturing local youth into the leaders of tomorrow,” she said.
