Baby boost for diabetes

A BERWICK family is encouraging local residents to indulge in some jelly babies during May.
Deborah Bayley is helping spread the word about Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Jelly Baby Month.
Ms Bayley’s son, Ryan, suffers from type-one diabetes – a condition that researchers are yet to find a cure for.
The seven-year-old has previously been a JDRF youth ambassador and has lived with diabetes since he was diagnosed in 2003.
JDRF CEO Mike Wilson said all funds raised during the campaign would go towards research into type-one diabetes and its associated health complications.
The jelly baby products – which are available from Safeway supermarkets, Amcal pharmacies and the JDRF website – have been chosen as they can be a lifesaver for people with type-one diabetes.
The lollies are often eaten by people with the disease as it provides a quick source of sugar when their blood sugar level falls dangerously low.
“Our researchers stand on the threshold of finding a cure for this devastating disease and with the support of the Australian community we know we will find it,” Mr Wilson said.
JDRF is the world’s largest not-for-profit supporter of diabetes research, investing more than $130 million each year into finding a cure for type-one diabetes. For more information about Jelly Baby Month visit www.jdrf.org.au or call 1300 363 126.
