Girlfriend leaps in for radio proposal

A NARRE Warren woman proposed to her boyfriend live on radio’s Nova 100 as part of a leap year wedding proposal competition last Friday.
With the help from Hughsey and Kate, Carolyn Dewit proposed to her now fiancé Steve because she was sick of waiting for him to do so.
Ms Dewit said she heard the radio asking for any female listeners who would be interested in proposing to their partners live on radio.
After several interviews she was later told she had been selected to take up the challenge.
“I told him we won a champagne breakfast followed by a horse drawn carriage ride through the city as part of a radio competition,” she said.
“He was very suspicious about it as we had to leave home at about 7.50 in the morning.”
With quick cross overs to Hughsey and Kate, Ms Dewit was feeling the nerves.
“There was only a tiny little bit of me that thought he would say ‘no’ but, apart from that, I was pretty confident he’d say yes,” she said.
When it came to the crunch and asked if he would marry her, Steve told Hughsey to cross to an ad break, leaving listeners wondering what his answer would be. He later said ‘yes’ to Ms Dewit’s proposal.
“I was playing along with the situation. I was adding some humour to the event,” Steve said.
“I must say, I was a little bit suspicious as to why we were having a horse drawn cart ride through the city at eight o’clock in the morning but I honestly didn’t think this would happen live on air.”
Ms Dewit won a free, solitary diamond ring for her on air proposal but was unaware of the prize until the day before the scheduled event.
She said she’d let him get over the shock of the event before they begin planning for the wedding.
“Maybe I’ll contact another radio station to see if we can win a wedding,” she said.
But despite Steve’s willingness for a nude wedding, Ms Dewit said ‘no’.
