NARRE WARREN lost the toss to St Mary’s in the first week of its second round Turf clash at Carroll Reserve and the home team had no hesitation in electing to bat on a flat, hard wicket.
St Mary’s got off to a good start. With Chris Jarrett not playing, Troy Cashman got away a little bit and made a well compiled 25 before Dave Wheeler struck for his first of the day. Wheeler then struck again with the wicket of captain/coach Atkinson for 19.
When English recruit Needham was run out soon after, St Mary’s were in a spot of bother at 3 for 60. A 78-run partnership between Byron and McKay then followed and the Saints were well poised at tea at 3 for 123.
Debutant Duane Hughes was brought into the attack and had instant success, removing Mckay for 41.
Enter Dwayne Scott! After bowling beautifully the previous game without a lot of success, Scott precisely dismantled the Saints batsman with flight, turn and bounce that made a lot watching think that the “Genius” was back.
With Wheeler coming back on and supporting Scott with the big wicket of Luke Byron the damage was done. Wheeler finishing with another tremendous game and picking up 3/60 off 21, John Simpson 14 overs for 34, Michael Sigaras, impressive again, 7 overs for 19, Hughes 1/13 off 4 and of course Scott 22.4 overs, 2 maidens 5/63.
Omar Baker in his second game behind the stumps in Turf 1 had four fantastic dismissals including two catches up to the stumps to Scott and a very good stumping.
St Mary’s were all out for 228.
Narre had to face six tough overs and with team of the year player Coomaraswamy, things weren’t going to be easy. He proved to be a handful and struck with the second ball of the innings to remove Mick Dennis for a first ball duck and nightwatchman Omar Baker soon followed for 4. Narre were 2/19 at the close with captain Wendell Perumal and debutant Hughes at the crease.

Playing Hallan Kalora Park and batting first on a small ground, Narre Warren started with a good partnership and continued with a wonderfully consistent performance with everyone contributing one way or another.
Finishing with 7/159, an equally consistent team effort from all of the Narre bowlers should make the task very tough for the opposition.
