Students skip class, but only this once…

CASEY students were treated to a world-class skipping spectacular on Friday when a young troupe from Queensland sprang into their school.
Cleveland Air Magic visited Berwick’s Kambrya College and St Catherine’s Primary School showcasing their thrilling skipping tricks to an enthralled audience.
Students at Beaconhills College in Pakenham were also treated to a performance that included cart-wheels, somersaults in the air and amazing tricks with multiple skipping ropes and even a pogo stick and go-go balls.
The troupe boasts a number of world records and world champion wins and Australian skipping coach Carol Barker accompanied them on Friday.
Fran Brindell, the manager of the Berwick-based Flying High Rope Skipping Club, helped organise the visits and said skipping had generated a lot of interest in the area.
Her two daughters were members of Cleveland Air Magic before they moved to Berwick two years ago.
Ms Brindell formed the group, which now boasts 25 young skippers, 18 months ago so her daughters could continue their passion. “It is great for the heart and muscles and it can be a singular act with just one person or it can be a team event as well.
“You do it to music, so it is really fun,” she said.
On Saturday and under the guidance of the Australian Rope Skipping Association (ARSA), the Berwick group and Altona-based skipping troupe Jumpworx also came together for the first competition and rope-skipping workshop in Victoria.
Courses were also held for judges and coaches.
Ms Brindell said Flying High was currently running under the banner of the ARSA but on Saturday they had voted to form the Victorian Rope Skipping Association with its Altona counterpart.
“It’s really a very exciting time for skipping in Melbourne and it has attracted a lot of interest in the Berwick area,” she said.
