Water savings have a flow-on effect

By Melissa Meehan
BRENTWOOD Park Primary School will soon have the ability to save one-fifth of their water bill each year.
Under the third round of the Australian Government Community Water Grants Initiative La Trobe MP Jason Wood presented Brentwood Park Primary School with $41,683 on Friday.
Water and waste coordinator Teresa Kemp said the grant would be used to install two water tanks outside the school’s gymnasium that will save 440,000 litres of water per year.
“At the moment rainwater from the gym roof goes straight to the storm water drains, but the grant will allow us to capture the water and use it to supply the male and female toilets in the gymnasium,” Ms Kemp said.
“It’s great that we are finally able to get the grants, water saving is such an important practice in this day and age.”
Ms Kemp said that local plumber Anthony Marsh was instrumental in helping to get the water grant for the school.
“He spent two days, free of charge, coming up with designs that we could take to the government and apply for the grants,” Ms Kemp said.
Harvested rainwater will also be used to irrigate the garden and grassed playing surfaces.
