Winter tips to stop drips

DESPITE the winter weather Casey residents have been urged to conserve water this season, and not be tempted by long hot showers.
South East Water managing director Dennis Cavagna said permanent water-saving rules should be treated as a minimum and households should look at other ways to save water around the home during winter.
“Gardens need little or no water during winter so householders should reduce watering and reprogram automatic watering systems.
“Shower times should be kept to around four minutes, despite the cold weather,” Mr Cavagna said.
He said the rules helped to stop water wastage and encouraged all of us to value the precious resource for the long term.
Along with Permanent Water Saving Rules, South East Water encourages householders to install a water-saving shower head or flow-control valve, which will save up to 30 per cent of shower water.
The company suggests users make sure each cycle is a full load and use an economy setting with washing machines by adjusting the water level to suit the size of load and turn off the tap when brushing teeth in order to potentially save 4000 litres a year. Instead, use a glass of water to rinse.
Water Minister John Thwaites has also called on Melburnians to continue their record water-saving efforts.
“During winter our water storage levels can be boosted by rain and by people using less water, particularly in the garden. We must make water-saving a year-round habit as well as a lifelong habit,” he said.
