Speed penalties need reinforcing, say police

By Kelly Yates
CASEY police are urging motorists to take care on the roads after an increase in speed-related road accidents.
Senior Sergeant Gerry Hengel from the Narre Warren Police Station said that Casey’s young people needed to re think their driving habits.
“They don’t realise the consequences of their actions,” he said.
“People don’t think it will happen to them.”
Sen Sgt Hengel reminded drivers of the harsh penalties for speeding drivers.
Drivers will lose their licence for one month, lose four demerit points and cop a $292 fine when caught driving 25km/h over the speed limit.
Sen Sgt Hengel said this law had been in operation for the past few years but he wanted to reinforce the message to drivers.
“It’s simple. Speed kills,” he said.
Sen Sgt Hengel said that mobile phones were one of the factors contributing to recent accidents.
“When people are on their mobile phones, their concentration is taken away from driving.
“You can’t do two things at once properly,” he said.
