Youths mix it up for a week of fun

NATIONAL Youth Week in Casey has been dubbed a roaring success with young people making the most of a variety of youth-friendly events and activities across the municipality.
The Culture Shock event kick-started the week’s celebrations and proved to be a great success with more than 170 young people in attendance.
The event included performances by world-class hip hop and R’n’B groups including A440, Phinesse, Pataphysics and Meliki as well as dance performances by Freeloaders, Rebecca’s School of Dance, Pollyhood and Krumping Boys.
The headline act at National Youth Week’s Spectrum Entertainment Fringe Fest FReeZA gig, The Getaway Plan, wowed the crowd at the Cranbourne Public Hall. About 620 young people attended the drug, alcohol and smoke-free event.
A permanent celebration of Casey’s young people was also unveiled during National Youth Week with the presentation of the sculptural seats public art projects in Cranbourne East and Narre Warren.
Beaconhills College student Kavya Raj and Lyndhurst Secondary College’s Bill Jordaan spoke about their involvement at the unveiling of the sculptural seats.
The project was undertaken by 32 young people who spent the past two years developing the concept and design for the seats.
The volunteers gave up their time and shared their ideas by brainstorming for the key message and the creative design.
City of Casey mayor Janet Halsall officially launched a new publication, So I think I am Pregnant? for young Casey parents-to-be as part of the weekly activities.
The book is a practical guide to pregnancy, beginning with the symptoms of pregnancy and what to do next.
Cr Halsall said the booklet was a collaboration between Casey’s youth and family services team and young parents of Cranbourne.
“They were keen to create a resource containing all the information and insights that they wish they had,” she said.
The booklet is available from City of Casey family resource centres or by contacting Cheryl Casey from council’s family development services team on 9705 5200.
