Young crash driver burnt

A 19-YEAR-OLD man suffered serious burns after the car he was in crashed and caught fire in Narre Warren North last week.
Metropolitan Ambulance Service paramedics attended the single-vehicle collision at Drysdale Avenue just before 9pm last Wednesday week.
Intensive-care paramedic Thomas Finneran said crews arrived to find the car had run off the road and overturned. Paramedics treated three other passengers, all men aged in their 20s, who were each taken to hospital in a stable condition.
“The car came to a rest on its roof, causing significant damage,” Mr Finneran said. “The roof was pushed down to the height of the seat, trapping the 19-year-old, who was soaked by leaking petrol. The car then caught fire. CFA crews quickly put the fire out, but the man suffered burns to 60 per cent of his body including his chest, abdomen, back, upper arms, face and hands. Thankfully most of the burns were superficial.
“We were concerned given he had burns to his face that he might develop breathing problems if his throat swelled.”
Mr Finneran said a drip was put in the man’s arm. He was also given pain relief and fluids to help stabilise him. He was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.
