Answers to epilepsy has kids pondering

A BERWICK school has come together in support of one of its own, who suffers from epilepsy.
Berwick Fields Primary School student Brayden Ackers, nine, had his classmates beside him as they took part in last week’s Epilepsy Australia Trivia Challenge.
Brayden, who was diagnosed with the condition as a three-year-old, has been supported by his fellow students as well as his teachers throughout his time at the school.
The grade four student can suffer up to five seizures a day, which leads to extensive time away from school.
Brayden’s mother Lyn has been full of praise for the staff at Berwick Fields.
She said the teachers had been supportive in helping deal with her son’s epilepsy and the associated issues that had arisen from his illness.
“He suffers from prejudice in other areas of his life but he doesn’t have any problems at school,” Ms Ackers said.
“Because he looks normal and acts fairly normal, some people just think he is a naughty boy.”
Ms Ackers said a teacher approached her about running the Epilepsy Australia Trivia Challenge at Brayden’s school.
The event, which helps raise both awareness and funds for The Epilepsy Foundation, was a hit among students, she said.
“They raised $100, which was pretty good considering it was just the grade three/fours.”
