STUDENTS from Beaconhills College were thrilled with their recent win at the annual Kea Cup netball tournament held at St Margaret’s School, Berwick.
Beaconhills College mixed team brought the cup back to the village campus, Berwick, after it narrowly defeated last year’s winners, Berwick Lodge in a fast and furious grand final.
The team grabbed an early lead in the first five minutes of the final and refused to let go, playing with skill and determination throughout the game.
Students returned with the cup and made a traditional victory run through the college grounds and corridors.
Co-ordinating teacher Judie Rundle said the competition was getting tougher each year, with the skills and speed of teams obvious to all spectators.
Beaconhills selected its two teams late last year and the squads had been training hard twice a week, during their lunchtimes, to polish their skills and develop their talent.
“It is such a buzz for the students involved as this is the second time Beaconhills College, village campus, has won the Kea Cup,” she said.
Best on court was awarded to Joel Pay, who was a late inclusion into the team.
The annual event, sponsored by Kea designer sportswear, is a round-robin netball competition across three days and attracts more than 400 primary school students from the south east region.
Since 1998, the Kea Cup has continued to expand with new schools entering every year.
