AUSTRALIA Post has responded to public pressure and will install a post box at Amberly Park Shopping Centre in Narre Warren South.
The decision was made last week following a story in the News which detailed the community’s effort in getting more than 500 people to sign a petition requesting changes to mailing services.
Pharmacy owner John Chua was behind the petition, which called on Australia Post to establish a post box or post office at the popular shopping strip.
The post box is expected to be installed in the next few weeks.
Mr Chua said he was thrilled with the announcement.
“That’s great news,” he said. “I’m absolutely ecstatic to hear that. We ended up getting about 600 signatures, so it’s good.”
Australia Post state communications adviser Gale English said the organisation was satisfied a new post box at Amberly Park Shopping Centre would help meet the postage needs of the community.
“Its location means it should be sufficiently patronised to justify cost of providing, maintaining and clearing the box,” Ms English said.
But Mr Chua has vowed to continue campaigning for a post office to be eventually located at the site.
“It is still on the agenda,” he said.
“At least we have got something here now and now we can push on and look at trying to get a post office here.”
Residents in the area must travel to Webb Street, Narre Warren, or Fountain Gate Shopping Centre to use a post office.
