WINNERS are grinners, and seven lucky News readers are all smiles after learning potentially life saving CPR skills at a Narre Warren training centre earlier this month.
The Casey residents took part in a half-day session at Lynex Health Care and Training Services after they won a course offered in conjunction with Star News Group last month.
Many of the participants highlighted their will to learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) as stemming from a desire to care for their loved ones in an emergency situation.
Narre Warren resident Donna Thatcher was thrilled to win the course and said the skills learnt at the training session had given her great peace of mind in knowing what to do in the event of an emergency.
“I really loved it,” she said.
“It was a wonderful session and I’m going back to do a full level II first-aid course in September.”
The mother of three said her main motivation for wanting to learn CPR was being able to care for her young children as well as other family members.
“My mum lives with us and she has just found out she has a heart condition.
“My dad regularly visits and he had a heart attack a few months ago,” she said.
Ms Thatcher said she also had an ambition to work with children in the future, and potential employers looked upon CPR training with great regard.
Other CPR course participants included a grandmother who wanted to learn the skill because she regularly babysat her one-year-old grandson.
Two winners also had an interest in childcare and believed their employment prospects would be higher if they had first-aid accreditation.
And the mother of a 10-year-old girl diagnosed with a heart condition wanted to know CPR in case her daughter fell sick at home.
