THE death of a motorcyclist at a notorious Doveton intersection last week has prompted a local resident to renew his call for the junction to be revamped immediately.
Danny Saric estimates that at least a dozen serious collisions have occurred at the corner of Princes Highway and Olive Road while he has lived in the area.
Mr Saric has lived near the high collision zone for more than four years and says he is sick and tired of the regular crashes.
He said several concerned resident had circulated a petition calling for VicRoads to alter the intersection, about a year ago.
“I’ve written letters to VicRoads, the local council and relevant State MPs and I have had mixed support,” he said.
“I think there could be a simple solution if the authorities get together and discuss the issues.”
Mr Saric’s comments come after police said a Camberwell resident died at the intersection after he collided with a blue Holden Commodore last week.
The 42-year-old man was travelling east along Princes Highway when he collided with the car which was making a right hand turn into Olive Road. He died at the scene.
“If we can stop another collision or even if we can stop another person from being injured or killed that would be great.”
Mr Saric said there was another major collision at the intersection only two days after the fatal motorcycle accident.
“These people get unnecessary exposure to trauma when these things can be avoided.”
VicRoads regional director Steve Brown said the State Government recently announced that $756,000 would be spent on installing traffic lights at the intersection.
He said the contract to install these lights had been advertised, with work expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
