Family escapes boat blaze

AN ENDEAVOUR Hills family had a holiday to forget recently after their boat caught fire while on dry land.
Boat owner Louise Duggan said her family was lucky to escape serious injury after the blaze took hold of the family’s boat which was parked near a friend’s holiday house on Phillip Island.
All indications pointed towards the fire, which started in the early hours of the morning, being deliberately lit, Ms Duggan said.
“It was only minutes away from catching on to the house,” she said.
“The fire brigade said if we didn’t have a full tank of petrol on the boat the vapours would have leaked and it would have gone up.”
Ms Duggan said the $25,000 boat was still being assessed by the insurance company but “more than likely it will be written off”. “My husband is devastated about the boat. We are just hoping that if someone knows about it (the fire) or overhears someone talking about it to contact the police. It was so close to our family being hurt.”
Wonthaggi Police are investigating. Anyone with any information is asked to contact 5672 2761.
