A 1960s film classic and a pet cat have inspired a Narre Warren South fashion designer’s latest creation.
Kylie Murray’s evening gown was recently featured in the annual Australian Masters of Fashion, formerly Australian Gown of the Year, at Crown Casino.
The event was open to all students studying to become fashion designers and professional designers across the country.
Ms Murray entered the student evening wear section where she competed against 40 other entries.
Her design did not reach the finals, but judges acknowledged her work as an outstanding effort for a first attempt.
The 19-year-old studies at the College of Fashion in East Melbourne and said she was keen to open up her own fashion business after graduation.
Ms Murray said she had been interested in fashion for the past six years and already planned to enter more categories at the 2007 Australian Masters of Fashion.
She said she loved designing and seeing her final creations come to life.
The former Berwick Secondary College student is working on her own clothing range and said she also enjoyed creating more casual wear, such as surf clothing.
She hopes to register her own label, Alskice, soon.
Ms Murray spent a year planning and creating her design and said entering the fashion competition was not just about hearing her name being called out, but competing with the best designers in the Australian Industry.
Kooweerup local Sam Smith made the model’s jewellery and Ms Murray said she is hoping to attract local sponsors for next year’s awards.
Ms Murray said the inspiration for the design came about when her pet cat sat on a piece of shiny material and she saw how well the fur and fabric looked together.
She also drew inspiration from movies such as the 1964 classic My Fair Lady.
