THE Socceroos may have a few local lads pushing for selection over the next few years if the Eumemmerring College soccer team is any indication.
The year eight Gleneagles students were crowned 2007 Victorian Secondary School State Champions after taking all before them in the finals recently.
The team didn’t concede a goal in its three qualifying games, beating North Geelong, Wodonga MYC and Lalor Secondary College with identical 2-0 scorelines, and continued the clean sheet in the final when it defeated Blackburn Secondary College 5-0.
Soccer coach George Theodorou said he was immensely proud of the team.
“I was very proud of the boys on the day for both the way they played and for the gracious way in which they received their medals and savoured their victory,” he said.
“The team is certainly worthy champions and ambassadors for both the sport of soccer and the Gleneagles campus of Eumemmerring College.”
The tightknit back four combined well in defence, which enabled the midfielders and strikers to play a free flowing attacking style of game.
Spectacular goals were scored with long shots from outside the box and into the corner of the net.
“All the squad contributed to this achievement,” Mr Theodorou said.
“Once again, congratulations to the boys and we all hope that this success can be repeated in 2008 and beyond.”
