EVERY little drop of water is precious at Kambrya College.
A Year seven class at the Berwick school has undertaken several water saving initiatives to cut their collective water usage from 3800 litres per day to under 1000.
The 23 students have used interesting and novel ways of cutting down their shower time including playing a song and getting out when the tune ends and the more conventional four-minute timer.
Environment and sustainability coordinator Michael Rosenfield said the students had been keeping weekly records of their water usage and had been attempting to better each level every week.
“The flow-on effect of these students being involved in the Water Challenge has been great,” Mr Rosenfield said.
“Families of these students are now following their students’ examples and reducing their shower times to four minutes.”
He said some families were also recycling grey water for the garden with buckets placed in showers also a popular option.
“With families now taking on the challenge, families of these students will probably save over one million litres of water this year.”
The work is part of Kambrya’s ongoing commitment to the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative.
Mr Rosenfield said the next step for students is to begin looking at how much energy they are using and ways to cut greenhouse gases.
