A CAR was struck by another vehicle on Friday night, when an L-plater pulled over to swap drivers in an emergency-stopping lane.
The collision, on the South Gippsland Freeway near the Monash Freeway merge ramp in Doveton, has prompted a police warning that emergency lanes should only be used in times of emergency.
The car was struck about 7.30pm when a white Ford station wagon hit the back of the parked sedan.
The Dandenong CFA Rescue Crew helped free the 16-year-old L-plate driver and the other passenger. The Hallam Country Fire Authority was also on hand to help.
Both women were taken to Dandenong Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the station wagon, a 26-year-old Malvern East man, was also taken to Dandenong Hospital for treatment.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident but Sergeant Pat McGavigan of Casey Traffic Management Unit has urged drivers not to park in emergency stopping lanes except in an emergency.
“Emergency stopping lanes are just that. They are not for choice. Most freeways are 100 kilometres an hour. There is limited room for error. It is an emergency lane not a parking lane.
“If you are going to stop, always be aware of the traffic especially what is coming behind you,” Sgt McGavigan said.
