BOOKWORMS from across the City of Casey are flocking to local libraries in numbers this summer and taking part in a nationwide reading program.
The Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation (CCLC) has joined public libraries from across Australia in participating in the Summer Reading Club this year.
A superheroes theme began last month and flies through until February.
Library Corporation community engagement librarian Cenza Fulco said: “The Summer Reading Club extends across the whole summer to promote reading and reading-related activities to children aged five to 16 via their local libraries and a dedicated website.”
Last summer more than 600 children joined the Summer Reading Club at Casey-Cardinia Libraries and more than 5700 books were read.
Officials expect avid readers to participate in all centres including Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Hampton Park, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Emerald and the Cardinia Mobile.
This year’s program, coordinated by the Australian Library and Information Association, is the first time it has been national.
It has grown out of the traditional state-based programs held over the past several years and is based on significant input from dedicated children’s librarians who volunteer to develop resources to promote the value of reading and literacy.
