LOCAL Government Minister Richard Wynne attended the official opening of the Brentwood Park Community Centre last month.
Casey mayor Janet Halsall opened the Berwick complex watched by staff and volunteers of the centre.
Cr Halsall said that after extensive consultation with community groups, the extension would allow the introduction of new programs offered by Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House.
“The extension, which includes a large space that can be divided into two smaller rooms, as well as a new kitchenette and secure storage space, will help existing user groups to cater for their growing membership, and provide increased opportunities for residents of Berwick,” she said.
The project was made possible by funding of $192,000 from the Victorian Government through the Department of Planning and Community Development’s Modernising Neighbourhood Houses program, as well as $92,000 from the City of Casey.
“Council is committed to ensuring facilities such as our local community centres, are maintained and upgraded to cater for the changing needs of our community.
“We recognise that centres such as the Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House play a vital role in our growing city,” Cr Halsall said. “I am also very pleased that the State Government recognises the growing needs of our community.”
Neighbourhood Houses offer a range of activities and learning opportunities including dancing, art classes, bridge club, playgroups, yoga, life activities for older residents and pilates.
They’re also available for the community to hire for functions and special activities.
“Along with the very important tangible benefits the extension provides, there are many social benefits including enhancing a sense of belonging and a feeling of connection to the local community. I am delighted that we are able to provide this facility for the community so that the diverse needs of residents can be met,” Cr Halsall said.
